Overview
This article contains instructions for maintaining Data Tag associations within the object-level hierarchy, including data stores, databases, schemas, and tables. Tagging objects allow you to group sensitive data for many use case types, from compliance to industry needs, or general business requirements.
The maintenance of Data Tags themselves is performed within the Classification > Data Tags screen; to learn more, visit our Data Tags article.
Object Hierarchy
There are five levels within the object hierarchy. Follow these instructions to access each individual level:
Object Type | Hierarchy Level | How to Access | Example |
---|---|---|---|
Data Store | 1 | Navigate to the Data Stores > Data Store Inventory screen > Connected tab. | ![]() |
Database | 2 | From the Data Store object level (see above), click on any Data Store Identifier hyperlink. | ![]() |
Schema | 3 | From the the Database object level (see above), click on any Database Name link. | ![]() |
Table | 4 | Access the Schema object level (see above), click on any Schema Name link. | ![]() |
Field | 5 |
From the Table object level (see above), click on any Table Name link; or Navigate to the Classification > Classification Management screen. |

Managing Object-Level Tags
Applying Tags
On any hierarchy level except the Field object, click the Data Tags field to display the Data Tag selector. From there, mark checkboxes for the Data Tags you want applied on this level.

For the Field object, application of Data Tags (e.g. the bottom level of the hierarchy) is performed within the Classification > Classification Management screen; to learn more, visit our Field-Level Classification article.
On any level, you can also create a new Data Tag by clicking the Create New Tag button. To learn more, visit our Data Tags article.
Inheritance
When you associate a Data Tag to any object above the Field-level, the association is inherited by all descendants within the object hierarchy. For example, tagging a Database will enforce that Data Tag on the Schema (child) and Field (grandchild) levels, but not on the Data Store (parent) level.
When viewing Data Tag associations within table rows or filters, the platform will provide an indicator of which Data Tags are controlled by this inheritance and from which source object of the hierarchy. If you wish to modify such inherited associations, visit the source object and perform your changes there.
